Before I give you the answer and crack some science, let me share a personal story with you.
I recall a time at JPMorgan when my colleague Stefania and I were giving a presentation for a large group of prestigious M&A lawyers and investment bankers in Paris.
Time was tight and we tried to walk as fast as we could. Mind you, high heels aren’t meant for running. As we approached Place Vendome, one of my heels collapsed and before hitting the ground I grabbed Stef AND a the arm of a motorcyclist next to me. I burst out laughing.
The poor guy blubbed something in French and Stef pointed out we had no time to go back to the hotel for a new pair of shoes so she lent me her flats which magically manifested from her handbag. They fit perfectly. I binned my dead shoes outside Cartier with pleasure.
We laughed our way to the building of our presentation and kept laughing after the presentation was over when my colleagues said it was the fist time they’ve seen me in flats.
You see, against conventional advice, I never suppressed my smile or laughter at work.
I remember this junior summer intern who asked me: “but don’t you get fired for that”? The answer is no. But it can take courage.
I’ve found laughter has made me twice as productive, much happier as a person, a better colleague, it brought me more business and helped me get all the stress out of my system.
Scientific research has shown that laughter improves alertness, creativity and memory (no wonder why we rocked that Paris presentation), and what’s even better: it reduces cortisol (stress), helps you live longer, and maintains your blood sugar and insulin levels stable which means you’ll store less fat.
Laughter also gives you a mini-facial (for free!) and 15 minutes of strong laughter a day burns around 300 calories a week, which equals 2 kilos (4 lbs) a year.
I’m not suggesting that you go live life like a clown, but I guess it’s nice to let go once a day and snort your nostrils out when something ungracious happens.
Spilled coffee on you desk, a missed train, being late, a hole in your tights, a broken heel, or even a bad hair day.
Laughing at these jokes of destiny can be even more soothing than numbing the embarrassment with a slice of carrot cake at the nearby Starbucks.
Once a day, I always make time for some laughter, especially with a friend or a loved one. They need it too.
I have a surprise celebrity guest for you, and oh boy we do laugh in this 4 minute video.
Our beautiful guest is Ashley Stetts, who was signed by Ford Models aged 18, graced magazine covers like Women’s Health and featured on TV shows such as Good Morning America. In March 2012 she started an advice blog, called The Frugal Model, teaching us how to look gorgeous on a budget.
For one thing I’m sure, she’s the smartest model I know!
In this short 4 minute video Ashley and I lightly talk about a mix of topics, and laugh out loud (use your headphones!) including:
- Kim Kardashian’s money problems
- JLo’s bum
- Oprah, a Saint?
- What Ashley likes better than chocolate
- The Seat Guru
- and why we censored some jokes, ehem!
Question for you: Is it me, or does Ashley look like Kate Middleton???!! :-) Let me know in the comments below!
